“I Remember You” in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.

Hi all, Ziggy here.

Yes, I know it’s been an absolute age since I last commandeered John’s iPad and knocked out an edition for you, my adoring fans. But I’ve been busy. Enjoying myself if you must know.

I thought something was afoot when Rose and John spent time at the beginning of last week in the ground floor apartment. Giving it a bit of a dust over is, I think, the way Rose described it.

Now it’s not that uncommon for them to both descend the stairs with brooms, dusters, buckets and other cleaning paraphernalia and go into the apartment but it’s normally on a Thursday or Friday (getting quite clever with the days of the week aren’t I). Never on Tuesday.

This was puzzling. What was going on? Wednesday came and Wednesday went and still nothing. I was getting quite perturbed and agitated. The suspense was excruciating. If they were doing this to test my patience then they were succeeding.

Now if I had thought something was up before I knew for sure that it was on Thursday when I saw Rose with my lead in her hand doing her best impression of Barbara Woodhouse as she cried out “Walkies”.

Lead on it was onto the golf cart and down to Carlo & Ernie’s Runway Bar & Grill where John dropped Rose and I off, turned the ‘cart around and headed off down the road.

Minutes later I heard the sound of our ‘cart (they don’t sound all the same you know) as it pulled back in to the cartpark. And then I saw. And I knew. I thought “I remember you“. It was Frank. He’d come back to see me.

Now for those of you who are not aware of my background (shame on you) I was found , along with brother Grizzly, as a three week old young whippersnapper by Frank who, at the time, was a serving member of BATSUB.

Grizzly is on the right. The ‘blonde’ handsome one on the left is me. The Zigstar!

I was so excited and must admit that I lost my cool and jumped up down, licking and scratching (not intentionally of course) Frank at the same time.

But I’m an old soldier and there was only one way to celebrate seeing Frank again.

“Cheers Frank”.

It was great to see Frank again and we got to go back to our favourite haunt when we used to visit Ambergris Caye.

Recognise it? No.

They’d spotted I was in the bar.

That’s right, The Palapa Bar & Grill.

We spent a lot of time together during his stay but he also got to see some of his ex BATSUB colleagues too.

Funny they’re always at the bar isn’t it!

The time passed so quickly though and this morning it was time to say au revoir (I just know I’ll see Frank again).

Frank leaving the apartment for the last time on this visit.

But not before we’d squeezed in one last breakfast for Frank at Estel’s Dine By the Sea.

And then it was off to the San Pedro airstrip

where we said our farewells.

And I got back to doing what I do best.

Yes, that’s right, sentry duty!

The headline for today’s edition is based on the single released in 1962 by Frank Ifield which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Hello. My husband and I are looking to spend at least a month in Belize next winter, probably october. We’d like to have our own place and be with the locals. Can you help or can you give us some tips?

    1. Hi. Belize has a lot of diversity. What type of location do you see yourself wanting to eventually move to? I live on Ambergris Caye which is a major tourist destination. Being an island the cost of living is higher than on the mainland but the locale and lifestyle suit us.

Ziggy, John and Rose. It was such a pleasure to meet you all! So glad I had the chance to meet what to me are celebrities! If I had not been in such a “vacation state of mind” that day, I’m sure we would have had a much more coherent conversation. You were very gracious and I appreciate your patience! I hope we run into you again before we leave this island paradise!
    Best Regards,
    Jenny Bryan

    1. Likewise Jenny. We are always in a ‘vacation state of mind’ so don’t worry about it or apologise for something that we didn’t notice.
We too hope that we see you before you leave. In any event, enjoy your visit. After all, you are on vacation !

Hey Ziggy–Looks like Frank is enjoying Germany. Was just taking about a nice warm brochen and all the pastries there. Is Frank going to retire in Belize soon? Hello to Rose.

    1. Hi Kathy. Frank’s posting to Germany has now ended and on his return to the UK he will be based in Scotland. He’s got a while to go before he retires but I know he’s thinking of Belize as place to live. Now I know about the pastries I wish he had brought me some. Love Ziggy.

Ziggy, you are such a skilled and poetic writer! You should steal that iPad more often! I am coming to the island this Saturday for a week. I hope to run into you and your parents! Have a great day 🙂

    1. Why thank you Jenny. Maybe I should take the iPad permanently and then take over the blog! I hope I see you too. In any event, have a great time. Slobbery licks just for you. Ziggy.

I don’t know if this will get answered but I live in Florida and I am looking for a place for my extended family to retire in the next four years. I have been to Belize 6 times and love it. However we have a lot of pressure to move to Costa Rica (I don’t like it there) so I am trying to make some contacts to get more info on where to visit, where to stay, etc. so we can have a family vacation next Spring. I was hoping someone on your blog or you could make some suggestions. I know you will find me completely daft, if I had my druthers, I would retire in northern England or Dunfirmline, Scotland. But everyone in the family wants tropical and lower taxes so that’s out. So you know what info I’m looking for, any suggestions on where to visit?

    1. Hi Erin. Where you visit to decide if Belize is THE place for your retirement home really depends on what kind of life you are looking for and how disposal income you have. If I were you I would try to organise an extended holiday and visit various locations in Belize
We live on Ambergris Caye and love it but it’s not for everyone.
Please do email me if you are looking for specifics.

Agree with Wilma, the bat sub boys look like they are wearing fans on their heads!!! always good to hear from Ziggy. where is the brother.

    1. They might well have been Kristina. They can be hotheads! As to Ziggy’s brother, Frank gave a response.

  7. Jane says:

Bitter sweet for you all, I’m sure! Thanks for a great post.

    1. It was Jane. And thank you.

  8. Wilma Lingle says:

Hey Ziggy – good to hear from you again, I’ve missed you. If you get a chance to take pictures of the 3 guys at the bar in the future, try to get them to line up so it looks like they all have little “fan” fascinators on. Go back and check out that photo – it’s so close …

    1. Hi Wilma. I will try that if I get another chance. Ziggy.

  9. Frank says:

Ziggy’s brother Grizzly is being looked after by Curtis, who works for BATSUB, he lives on the mainland near Belize City. Unfortunately they have lost touch, but Grizzly is being well looked after.

  10. Love the Ziggy posts. Love hearing of island life from his perspective. Thank you!

    1. Thanks Charlie. I’ll try to grab hold of John’s iPad more often.

  11. Paul Cloutier says:

So, what happened to brother Grizzly, do you stay in touch ??
