“Like a Virgin” in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.

If I may use the term loosely (and I mean VERY loosely) I’ve been suffering from writer’s block recently.

I’ve still been spending my early morning quality ‘me time’ out on the veranda, the western, lagoon facing one with a mug of black (instant) coffee and the iPad. Clothed appropriately – because the mornings (and evenings too for that matter) have been, to say the least, a little chilly- in a sweat top. But , try as I might, I couldn’t think of anything to write about that had a semblance of reason (( I know, I know that most of what I write could be described as the ramblings of a troubled mind but I do like to think (misguidedly perhaps) that somewhere within an edition is a theme)).

Struggling to come up with something to write about I thought a change of vista might unlock that stream of thought so I headed off to Estel’s Dine By the Sea for breakfast. Hopefully you’re now starting to understand and appreciate the sacrifices I’m prepared to make to get an edition out!

I’m not far away from being a martyr to the cause!

The breakfast and the view were both as good as they always are but neither proved to be the stimulus that I needed. I was ready to concede defeat – oh how easily I give in now! But when I got home and opened the front gate it hit me. No not the gate, but an idea for an edition. I looked south and there it was.

Placards displaying the beaming and confident face of the incumbent ‘UDP‘Mayor, Daniel (‘Danny’) Guerrero.

With only just over a month to go (March 4) until the municipal elections the propaganda campaigns by both parties, the other party being ‘PUP‘ are well and truly underway with signage promoting one or other of the two parties (sometimes both) on virtually every street on the island.

‘PUP’ has gone on the offensive with some rather aggressive placards that pose questions of the opposition. With many of these boards placed immediately beneath the ‘UDP’ publicity material.

And the first banner I’ve sighted for PUP’s Mayoral candidate Doctor Giovanni Solorzano.

So why would some political banners get me thinking about an edition you’re thinking. Simple really. Having registered to vote (as a member of the British Commonwealth) and been issued with my voter’s I.D. Card

I’ve been waiting patiently to be wooed. Obviously being the age I am I’m more than used to the electioneering process in Britain and the way the political parties campaign for votes. But Belize? Well, if you think about it I’m a complete novice. One might even a bit like a virgin.

The headline for today’s edition is based on (surprise, surprise) the single released in 1984 by Madonna which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number three on the UK Singles Chart.

Oh, and before I forget, if you’re thinking of buying property in Belize then please do give Pelican Properties Limited/Belize Real Estate Limited the chance to help you find what you’re looking for. Please – my future prosperity might depend on it!

Hi John, glad you are feeling better and thought this post was very interesting and non biased. Good job! Hope to see you when we get back down there in (hopefully) July/August! Will look for you at ESTEL’S!

    1. Hi Susan. Thank you. I never discuss/make public my political affiliations. Please introduce yourself if you see me at Estel’s.

  2. footballbat says:

Ahhh politics. That silly old construct of mankind. And we were such a promising species in our early days; what with our crude adornment of cave walls telling the tales of another dreary day at the office and our pointed sticks. Que sera sera.

Always appreciate the new blogs John. Maybe if you get another block – you could give us a lovely photo tour of the new pavement progress from the Sir Barry bridge to Palapa Bar? Have you had any rains since the road went down in front of your house and how was the run off? How’s The Zig?

    1. Couldn’t agree more. I try not to talk about politics (and religion for that matter). Happy to include some photos though.

You’ll have see from the last edition that your suggestion was adopted ( I hope).

  3. Jane says:

Glad to see you e broken through “the block,” John. No opinions expressed, but I can see you appreciate some color in the environment. 🙂

    1. Take it as read Jane that I’ll never disclose my political leanings so publicly. Unless I get a massive bribe!

  4. Harry the Hornet says:

The guy on the ID card. Didn’t I see him on “America’s Most Wanted” or was it “Crimewatch UK”? Keep your eyes out for him and don’t have nightmares.

  5. robert vernon says:

If you got writers block the old fall back of politics and religion . Or you could take up the challenge and take over from the Sun, boobs on page 3 , that would keep you busy. I await with baited breath.

    1. Hi Robert. Not likely to get more than photos of the political opponents from me. I never discuss my political or religious leanings in public.
Now Page 3 girls? An entirely ( and much more pleasurable) subject!
